For the past 14 years Dutch photographer Friso Spoelstra travelled through Europe in search of ritual feasts. Throughout these years, Spoelstra has collected imagery from various European gatherings that have at their core pre-Christian and pre-Islamic rituals that bind – oftentime isolated – communities to their pagan pasts. Filmed and photographed in fifteen different European countries, a complete selection of the photographic imagery has been compiled in Spoelstra’s eponymous book, “Devils & Angels – Ritual Feasts in Europe”, published by Lecturis.

These photos and films, however, are about more than the festivities alone. They show a Europe beyond the bureaucratic struggles that face Brussels or the identity-based problems of the European Union. Devils & Angels brings together stories that show the unique individuality of European communities and localities, as well as surprising similarities between them and beyond.

Within the multifarious intangibility of European cultural heritage, Devils & Angels exhibits a heritage in which local tradition remains not only visible but also visceral. The merit for this uniquely achieved viscerality belongs to the photographer Friso Spoelstra alone. Spoelstra’s delicate, surreal approach to the subject-matter seems to immerse the first-time viewer into a ritualistic world that seems on the one hand exotic, yet on the other appears recognisable. It is as if Spoelstra convincingly shows that the pagan forebears that lie at the root of our common cultural experience, have trickled through millennia of history and continue to inform our cosmological dreams, our spiritual reality.

Voor de fototentoonstelling ‘Devils & Angels, Ritual Feasts in Europe‘ reisde ik door Europa op zoek naar rituele feesten. In totaal heb ik veertien jaar gewerkt aan het verzamelen van beelden van deze gevarieerde bijeenkomsten. Dit heb ik gefotografeerd en gefilmd in 15 verschillende Europese landen. Een volledige selectie van mijn beelden is samengesteld in het gelijknamige boek, uitgegeven door Lecturis.

 Maar deze foto’s en films gaan over meer dan de feesten alleen.In ons eigen Europa bevinden zich parallelle werelden die terug gaan in de tijd, die uitstijgen boven de gezamenlijke politiek van Brussel en de werkelijkheid waarin we leven. Onder de oppervlakte van een wereld vol van razendsnelle verbindingen en digitale media proberen enkele geïsoleerde dorpen en gehuchten hun identiteit te bewaren.

 Devils & Angels brengt verhalen samen die de unieke individualiteit van deze Europese gemeenschappen laat zien, evenals verrassende overeenkomsten. Daarin laat deze tentoonstelling verbinding zien tussen verschillende culturen over het hele continent.

 De oorsprong van deze feesten gaan ver terug, waarschijnlijk zijn dit erfenissen uit voor-Christelijke en pre-islamitische tijden. Steeds is er een zelfde patroon te ontdekken: de vernieuwing van het leven, de vruchtbaarheid, ons pact met de dieren en de band met de natuur, van wie we steeds meer vervreemd raken. En altijd speelt het zich af op afgelegen, geïsoleerde plekken in Europa, hoog in de bergen, op eilanden, of in ooit ondoordringbare bossen gelegen. Hoe onze voorouders leefden, dachten en deden dragen wij klaarblijkelijk ergens nog altijd met ons mee. Het zit in de bedrading van ons menselijk brein, aangelegd in de prehistorie.
