Endless Escape – Sakura Nakayama

Gallery WM presents Endless Escape, the first Amsterdam solo exhibition by Japanese photographer Sakura Nakayama. From 20 February to 20 March, Nakayama fills the gallery with raw analogue photographs and words that trace a restless movement between Tokyo, Okinawa and Amsterdam — images made with flash, urgency, and an unguarded proximity to life as it unfolds. The exhibition opens on Friday, 20^th of February from 18:00 to 21:00hrs.

Sakura Nakayama photographs as if she is standing inside the moment rather than observing it. Her camera is close, direct, almost confrontational; the flash erases distance and turns everyday situations into scenes that feel both intimate and exposed. Streets, friends, strangers, nights, rooms, bodies, crossings — all caught in a state of motion, as if no one, including the photographer, is entirely settled where they are.

Endless Escape is built from photographs made before and after Nakayama’s move from Japan to Amsterdam. The works carry the tension of someone who is always about to leave, or has just arrived. They do not romanticise escape; they show it as something instinctive, necessary, and deeply human. In Nakayama’s images, running away is not a gesture of disappearance, but of survival.

Throughout the exhibition, Nakayama combines photographs with text. Her words do not explain the images but run alongside them — like thoughts that surface while moving through a city alone at night. Together, they form a personal record of restlessness, responsibility, fear, desire, and the stubborn will to keep going.

In Endless Escape, there is no final destination. Only movement, vulnerability, and the refusal to stand still. Nakayama invites us into a world where leaving, arriving, and continuing are all part of the same gesture — painfully human, and unmistakably alive.

Endless Escape – Sakura Nakayama

Gallery WM presenteert Endless Escape, de eerste solotentoonstelling in Amsterdam van de Japanse fotograaf Sakura Nakayama. Van 20 februari tot en met 20 maart vult Nakayama de galerie met rauwe analoge foto’s en teksten die een rusteloze beweging volgen tussen Tokio, Okinawa en Amsterdam — beelden gemaakt met flits, urgentie en een onbeschermde nabijheid tot het leven zoals het zich ontvouwt. De opening vindt plaats op vrijdag 20 februari van 18:00 tot 21:00 uur.

Sakura Nakayama fotografeert alsof ze midden in het moment staat, in plaats van ernaar te kijken. Haar camera zit dicht op de huid, direct en bijna confronterend; de flits haalt elke afstand weg en verandert alledaagse situaties in scènes die zowel intiem als blootgelegd aanvoelen. Straten, vrienden, vreemden, nachten, kamers, lichamen, kruispunten — alles gevangen in een staat van beweging, alsof niemand, inclusief de fotograaf zelf, volledig op zijn plek is.

Endless Escape bestaat uit foto’s die Nakayama maakte vóór en ná haar verhuizing van Japan naar Amsterdam. De werken dragen de spanning van iemand die altijd op het punt staat te vertrekken, of net is aangekomen. De tentoonstelling romantiseert ontsnappen niet, maar toont het als iets instinctiefs, noodzakelijks en diep menselijks. In Nakayama’s beelden is wegrennen geen vorm van verdwijnen, maar van overleven.

Doorheen de tentoonstelling combineert Nakayama fotografie met tekst. Haar woorden verklaren de beelden niet, maar bewegen ernaast — als gedachten die opkomen wanneer je ’s nachts alleen door een stad loopt. Samen vormen ze een persoonlijk verslag van rusteloosheid, verantwoordelijkheid, angst, verlangen en de hardnekkige drang om door te gaan.

In Endless Escape is er geen eindbestemming. Alleen beweging, kwetsbaarheid en de weigering om stil te blijven staan. Nakayama nodigt ons uit in een wereld waar vertrekken, aankomen en doorgaan onderdeel zijn van hetzelfde gebaar — pijnlijk menselijk en onmiskenbaar levend.
