Know Thyself,
an artistic anthropological study on Self-Portraiture:

In deze eerste groepstentoonstelling door Blaton & Rypson, Anthropologists in Art, zijn beeldende kunstenaars en sociale wetenschappers uitgenodigd om in dialoog te treden. Basis van gesprek is een antropologische tekst over de aard van zelf-portretuur.

In de traditie van zowel de beeldende kunst als de sociale wetenschappen, is de representatie van het Zelf een fascinerend, zo niet fundamenteel onderwerp. Door beiden te combineren, opereren Blaton & Rypson als bemiddelaar voor beide disciplines. Het resultaat is een dynamisch dialoog over zelf-portretuur waar het visuele en het tekstuele, het artistieke en het wetenschappelijke, samenkomen

In de tentoonstelling “Know Thyself”, exposeren Blaton & Rypson de zelfportretten van de kunstenaars, alsmede het discours van de sociale wetenschappers. Het doel van de tentoonstelling is niet het geven van antwoorden per se, maar het oproepen van vragen. Door te kijken naar zelfportretten van anderen, stellen wij de vraag: hoe representeert u uw Zelf in deze wereld? Welke de existentiële vraag impliceert: is het überhaupt mogelijk om jezelf te kennen?

Know Thyself, 
an artistic anthropological study on Self-Portraiture:

In this first group-exhibition initiated by Blaton & Rypson, Anthropologists in Art, visual artists and social scientists were invited to respond to an anthropological text on the nature of Self-Portraiture.
In the tradition of both visual art and social science, the representation of self has been a fascinating, if not fundamental subject.

By combining the two, Blaton & Rypson operate as mediators to both disciplines. The result is a dynamic dialogue on Self-Portraiture where the visual and the textual, the artistic and the scientific, interact.

In the exhibition “Know Thyself”, Blaton & Rypson expose the artists’ self-portraits as well as the discourses of social scientists. The aim of the exhibition is not to provide answers per se, but to trigger the public. By looking at self-portraits of others, we raise the question: how do you represent yourself in this world, implying an even more important question: is it possible to know yourself?
