You are warmly invited to “Opposite People – 50/50”, a new solo exhibition by Amsterdam artist Larie Cook. Known for his sharp humour, offbeat wisdom and decades-long DIY practice, Larie Cook (Arie Plas b. 1975) presents a retrospective marking his 50th birthday. Featuring self-published comix, mirrored totemic drawings and small-press zines under his “Do and Make” imprint, this show reflects a lifelong drive to create—unapologetically personal and proudly off-centre.

Opposite People – 50/50 (20/6 through 19/7/2025) is a retrospective of Amsterdam artist Larie Cook, featuring reversible totem-like drawings, zines and over 20 years of self-made comix. Balancing confidence and doubt, pride and vulnerability, Larie Cook celebrates turning 50 with raw, urgent work created entirely on his own terms – seeing the world, and himself, from a different angle.

The title refers to the dualities within Larie Cook’s personality and art—serious and absurd, brilliant and irrelevant, certain and uncertain. Always making, always questioning. The exhibition includes dozens of originals, printed handouts, and recent ventures into music and lyrics. Larie Cook also works at the iconic Lambiek comic store, a fitting home for someone who draws, writes and doubts from the inside out.

We nodigen je van harte uit voor Opposite People – 50/50, een solotentoonstelling van de Amsterdamse kunstenaar Larie Cook. Bekend om zijn scherpe humor, eigenzinnige kijk op de wereld en jarenlange DIY-aanpak, viert Larie Cook (Arie Plas geb. 1975) zijn vijftigste verjaardag met een terugblik op meer dan twee decennia aan comix, small-press zines en gespiegelde totemische tekeningen, uitgegeven onder zijn label Do and Make.

Opposite People – 50/50 (20/6 t/m 19/7/2025) is een retrospectief van de Amsterdamse kunstenaar Larie Cook, met omkeerbare totem-achtige tekeningen, zines en meer dan twintig jaar aan zelfgemaakte comix. Balancerend tussen zelfvertrouwen en kwetsbaarheid, trots en twijfel, viert Larie Cook zijn vijftigste verjaardag met rauw, urgent werk dat volledig op eigen voorwaarden is gemaakt – waarbij hij de wereld, en zichzelf, vanuit een andere invalshoek bekijkt.

De titel verwijst naar de tegenstellingen in zijn werk en persoonlijkheid – tegelijk serieus en absurd, briljant en onbeduidend, overtuigd en zoekend. Maar altijd gedreven om te maken. De tentoonstelling toont tientallen originelen, hand-outs en nieuwe uitstapjes richting muziek en songteksten. Larie Cook werkt daarnaast bij de iconische stripwinkel Lambiek – een passende thuisbasis voor iemand die tekent, schrijft en twijfelt van binnenuit.
