Een halve eeuw in Amsterdam! Vijftig jaar leven, liefhebben, werken en samenwerken. Vanaf 1973 heeft het Japanse echtpaar Shusaku Takeuchi (artdirector van “Dormu Dance Theatre” en “Shusaku Bodytorium”) en Toshiko Karashima (grafisch- en kostuumontwerper) Amsterdam onveilig gemaakt en een enorme staat van dienst opgebouwd binnen de Amsterdamse artistieke wereld en ver daarbuiten. Ter gelegenheid van hun 50-jarige jubileum in Amsterdam, heeft Gallery WM de eer om een greep uit hun omvangrijke oeuvre te mogen presenteren. Met prachtig ontworpen posters uit de jaren ‘70, ‘80 en ’90, oud archiefmateriaal alsook origami-achtige wandsculpturen en installaties, zal de galerieruimte veranderen in een tijdscapsule. Daarnaast heeft het paar ook fotojournalist Maurice Boyer, die zoveel van Shusaku’s carrière heeft vastgelegd en door is beïnvloed, uitgenodigd om met zijn originele bariet prints mee te doen aan de expositie Move to Love, Love to Work.
Als jonge Hippies reisden Shusaku en Toshiko liftend met rugzakken door heel Europa en kwamen op hun route in Amsterdam aan. In de Melkweg kwamen ze in contact met Graziella Martinez, de internationaal befaamde Jango Edwards, Simon Vinkenoog, Herman Brood en anderen. Mede door hun ondersteuning werd in 1974 een eigen dansgezelschap opgericht. Dit dansgezelschap ontwikkelde zich vervolgens tot het Shusaku & Dormu Dance Theater, waarmee hij spraakmakende producties realiseerde zoals onder andere Eleven Shades of Grey, Matrix, Temenos. In de jaren ‘80 werd de actieradius van dit gezelschap uitgebreid naar West-Europa zoals Duitsland, Frankrijk, Italië en Spanje tot in Oost-Europa met voorstellingen in Hongarije, Polen en de Sovjet Unie. Het Shusaku & Dormu Dance Theater was het eerste Westerse gezelschap dat officieel mocht optreden op het Rode Plein in Moskou! Om de mogelijkheden van het menselijk lichaam te verkennen, combineerde hij fysieke expressie met het gebruik van computers, geluidseffecten en virtual reality. Architectonaal (1990) gaf het startsein voor een lange reeks massale site-specific projecten. Zijn tweede gezelschap: Shusaku Bodytorium, werd gevormd in 1992 waarmee hij o.a The Package, Floating Silhouettes, Reservoir en Bolt maakte. Ook maakte hij verschillende choreografieën voor andere gezelschappen zoals de Rotterdam Dance Group en het Nederlands Dans Theater en festivals zoals Oerol en het Holland Dance Festival in Den-Haag.

Toshiko Karashima is een veelzijdig kunstenaar: schilderwerk, grafisch werk, decor- en kostuumontwerp. Ze heeft een groot aantal producties van het Dormu Dance Theatre en van Bodytorium mede vormgegeven. Sinds 2013 heeft ze haar focus verlegd naar papierwerk, origami-achtige wandsculpturen waarin ze enorm veel fantasie, verhaal, variatie, complexiteit en vakmanschap heeft ontwikkeld.
Maurice Boyer is een gerenommeerd fotojournalist, hij werkte o.a. voor de NRC.
Boyer heeft zich door Shusaku laten inspireren tot een andere, vrijere manier van kijken.
Shusaku, Toshiko en Maurice zullen aanwezig zijn op de feestelijke opening van Move to Love, Love to Work op zaterdag 17 juni 2023, 16:00-19:00 uur bij Gallery WM, Elandsgracht 35, 1016TN Amsterdam.

Half a century in Amsterdam! Fifty years of living, loving, working, and collaborating. Since 1973, the Japanese couple Shusaku Takeuchi (art director of “Dormu Dance Theatre” and “Shusaku Bodytorium”) and Toshiko Karashima (graphic and costume designer) have painted Amsterdam red and built up an enormous track record within the Amsterdam artistic world and far beyond. On the occasion of their 50th anniversary in Amsterdam, Gallery WM has the honour to present a selection from their extensive oeuvre. With beautifully designed posters from the 70s, 80s and 90s, old archive material as well as origami-like wall sculptures and installations, the gallery space will turn into a time capsule spanning fifty years. In addition, the couple has invited photojournalist Maurice Boyer, who has documented and been influenced by so much of Shusaku’s career, to participate in the Move to Love, Love to Work exhibition with his original barite prints.
As young Hippies, Shusaku and Toshiko hitchhiked with backpacks across Europe and arrived in Amsterdam along the hippy-trail. In the Melkweg they met Graziella Martinez, the internationally renowned Jango Edwards, Simon Vinkenoog, Herman Brood and others. Partly due to their support, a dance company was founded in 1974. This dance company subsequently developed into the Shusaku & Dormu Dance Theatre, with which he realized high-profile productions such as Eleven Shades of Grey, Matrix, Temenos, among others. In the 1980s, the company’s range was expanded to Western Europe, such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain, as well as Eastern Europe with performances in Hungary, Poland and the Soviet Union. The Shusaku & Dormu Dance Theatre was the first Western company to be officially allowed to perform on the Red Square in Moscow! To explore the possibilities of the human body, he combined physical expression with the use of computers, sound effects and virtual reality. Architectonaal (1990) kicked off a long series of massive site-specific projects with hundreds of dancers involved. Toshiko Karashima is a versatile artist: painting, graphic work, set and costume design. She has co-designed a large number of productions of the Dormu Dance Theatre and Bodytorium. Since 2013 she has shifted her focus to paperwork, origami-like wall sculptures in which she has developed an enormous amount of fantasy, narrative, variation, complexity and craftsmanship.
Maurice Boyer is a renowned photojournalist, he worked for the NRC, among others. Boyer has been inspired by Shusaku to another, freer way of looking.
Shusaku, Toshiko and Maurice will be present at the grand opening of Move to Love, Love to Work on Saturday June 17, 2023, 4-7 PM at Gallery WM, Elandsgracht 35, 1016TN Amsterdam.
