DENTITY / UNTITLED – explores, via the first collaborative series of projects by artists MJ Turpin and Catarina Aimée Dahms – how generalizations and ignorance are enmeshed. Re-articulating the concept and notion of The Motherland (diasporatic migration) via politics, identity and geography. This exhibition deals with notions of the basic premise of the theory of: “what (you want) people (to) see, and what you are”, the interrogation of the constructs of identity via the deconstruction of immigration, the politics of identity and movement, perception and perceived identity, and an inversion of Frantz Fanon’s “Peau noire, masques blancs” (Black Skin, White Masks). Exploring the contemporary currency of face value and assuming the principle that nationality and race are socio-cultural constructs, the exhibition plays with the idea that ironically, racism may not be colour-specific. Juxtaposing visual representation of ignorance via a series of photographs, hand-drawn works, an installation and performance, this multimedia exhibition seeks to question and subvert established definitions and positions with regards to identity, geographic placement and the narratives thereof. IDENTITY / UNTITLED – verkent, via de eerste gezamenlijke reeks projecten door kunstenaars MJ Turpin en Catarina Aimee Dahms – hoe generalisaties en onwetendheid met elkaar zijn verstrikt. Het gaat hier om het re-articuleren van het concept en het begrip van het ‘Moederland’ (diasporatische migratie) via politiek, identiteit en geografie. Deze tentoonstelling gaat over noties en uitgangspunten van de theorie van: “wat (je wilt) dat mensen zien, en wat je bent “, de ondervraging van de constructen van identiteit via de deconstructie van immigratie, de politiek van identiteit en beweging, perceptie en gepercipieerde identiteit alsook een omkering van Frantz Fanon’s “Peau noire, masques blancs” Door de hedendaagse discours van veronderstellingen te verkennen, en uitgaand van het beginsel dat nationaliteit en ras sociaal-culturele constructies zijn, speelt de tentoonstelling met het idee dat racisme, ironisch genoeg, niet kleur-specifiek is. Door visuele representaties van onwetendheid door middel van een serie foto’s, hand-getekende werken tegenover elkaar te stellen, inclusief een installatie en performance, wil deze multimediale tentoonstelling de gevestigde definities en standpunten met betrekking tot identiteit, geografische plaatsing en de verhalen daarvan, bevragen en tegelijkertijd ondermijnen.
