Trees have always been the object of fascination. Better yet, as children, we couldn’t wait to clamber into the trees around us; big, wide, old, tall – they seemed to be put there especially for us to climb. Some of us have not lost the wonderment of this natural act, and continue to do so.

Cecylia Malik and Wanda Michalak are two such artists. And in the photographic duo-exhibition ‘Arbophilia’, they express their love of, and fascination for the natural world.

Cecylia Malik started climbing trees on September 25th 2009 as part of a rebellious performance project in public spaces. Inspired by Italo Calvino’s The Baron in the Trees, she continued to consistently climb a different tree top every day for 365 days. Every single day, she searched for a tree with a proper background and context in its surroundings, carefully choosing clothes to wear so that they could be a colouristic accent. While climbing trees, Malik experiences reality with all her senses, but the image she creates often becomes unreal. The project was a diary of sorts; a record of the passing of time and the changing of seasons. Thanks to Facebook, the project also became a virtual public performance; gaining more and more fans and attention. As she continued to place her images on her facebook profile, her fans commented them live, sending pictures of themselves in trees and recommending trees they thought Malik should also climb.

It was also through Facebook that Cecylia Malik and Wanda Michalak were introduced by a mutual friend. Michalak immediately felt an element of recognition regarding her own art work. For the past 20 years, Michalak has consistentlyand insistently travelled the world, in search of paradise. In search of a primordial utopia in which she can immerse herself and find peace, beauty and silent, peaceful admiration. Whereas Malik dresses up for the tree-climbing experience, Michalak does just the opposite; stripping naked to become just another natural element within the landscape, becoming one with the landscape around her, becoming landscape.It is this connection with nature that brought these two artists together in common arbophilia!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arborphilia

Bomen zijn altijd al het voorwerp van fascinatie geweest. Sterker nog, als kinderen, konden we niet wachten om in de bomen om ons heen te klauteren; grote, brede, oude, hoge – het leek alsof ze er voor ons waren neergezet om te beklimmen. Sommigen van ons zijn de verwondering van deze natuurlijke neiging niet kwijt geraakt, en zijn bomen blijven beklimmen.

Cecylia Malik en Wanda Michalak zijn twee van dergelijke kunstenaars. In de fotografische duo-tentoonstelling ‘Arbophilia’, uiten zij hun liefde en fascinatie voor de natuurlijke wereld om hun heen.

Cecylia Malik begon op 25 september 2009, als onderdeel van een opstandige performance project in de openbare ruimte, met het beklimmen van bomen. Geïnspireerd door Italo Calvino’s De baron in de bomen, beklom zij – een jaar lang – consequent elke dag een andere boom. Per dag zocht ze een boom met de juiste achtergrond en omgeving, om daarna zorgvuldig haar kleding te kiezen zodat er een coloristische nadruk zou worden gelegd. Terwijl zij in de bomen klimt, ervaart Malik de werkelijkheid met al haar zintuigen, maar het beeld dat zij creëert wordt vaak onwerkelijk.

Het project was een soort dagboek; een vastlegging van het verstrijken van de tijd en de verandering der seizoenen. Dankzij Facebook, werd het project ook een virtuele publieke prestatie, de aandacht van meer en meer fans trekkend. Ze bleef haar beelden plaatsen op haar Facebook-profiel, terwijl haar fans er commentaar op leverden, foto’s van zichzelf in bomen stuurden, en tips gaven over bomen waarvan ze vonden dat Malik ze ook moest beklimmen.

Het was ook via Facebook dat Cecylia Malik en Wanda Michalak werden geïntroduceerd door een wederzijdse vriend. Michalak voelde onmiddellijk een element van herkenning ten aanzien van haar eigen kunstwerk. De afgelopen 20 jaar, heeft Michalak consequent en nadrukkelijk de wereld afgereisd op zoek naar het paradijs. Op zoek naar een oorspronkelijke utopie, waarin ze zichzelf kon onderdompelen en rust vinden, schoonheid en stilte, en vreedzame bewondering. Terwijl echter Malik zich meticuleus aankleedt voor de boom-klim ervaring, doet Michalak precies het tegenovergestelde; haar kleding uittrekkend om gewoon een ander natuurlijk element in het landschap te verworden, één worden met het landschap om haar heen, zelf deel van het landschap te worden.

Het is deze verbinding met de natuur dat deze twee kunstenaars samenbrengtin gemeenschappelijke arbofilie!
