On June 18th, WM Gallery / Anthropologists in Art present the new work TWO SOURCES / MYRIAD FOUNTAINS 2011 by Amsterdam-based artist Frank Mandersloot (Utrecht, 1960). During the exhibition, that will last one hour, those present will be asked to complete this sculpture.

The work of Frank Mandersloot demonstrates the unstable meaning of things through the changeability of their state, depending on their context and their different uses. His work is a reflection on its status as an artwork and the value systems that affect its reception.

TWO SOURCES / MYRIAD FOUNTAINS 2011 is a radical interpretation of Duchamp’s notion of ‘reciprocal readymade’ because in this work, two bottle racks – better known in an art context as Duchamp’s first Readymade “Porte-bouteilles, 1914′ – return as objects in their original uses. Visitors will be asked, by placing bottles on a bottle rack, to pour bottles of Argentinean Lauquen spring water into an empty basin. The water then becomes a fountain. Argentinean wines will also served from Bodega Catena Zapata. The empty wine bottles will also be placed to dry on the wine rack, for reuse. Later, the wine-drinking visitors will (out of sight) create fountains of their own.

TWO SOURCES / Myriad FOUNTAIN 2011 is dedicated to George Brecht’s score
‘raining pissing’ (George Brecht, Water Yam, 1962).

Previously, Mandersloot showed the related works WATER TO WATER 2008 (exhibitions: Collected and Shattered, W139, Amsterdam, 2008 / PUSH PULL, Rijksmuseum Twente, Enschede, 2010) and FOUNTAIN 2010 (exhibition: 6 Sculptures / 7 Sculptors, Vishal, Haarlem, 2010 ) From the latter work, one may see a recording film that can be found on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3EBpMl6-5YFrank Mandersloot has previously produced and exhibited works in which scores of Brecht have implicitly or explicitly been executed, such as THREE CHAIRS 1996 (SMBA, 1996), THREE CHAIRS FOR GEORGE BRECHT 2009 (Rijksmuseum Twenthe 2010) and this year the event MUSICAL CHAIRS 2011 (A Flux Day, Gerrit Rietveld Academie 2011).
