Almost thirty years ago, Birgitt Busz and Harrie Blommesteijn traveled through China twice — a total of three months that felt like real voyages of discovery.

The CITS, the state travel agency that mainly showed tourists what was allowed to be seen, still existed. But by then there were also small independent operators who helped travelers like them to get off the beaten track, to places where they themselves were a sight to behold.

This led to encounters they have never forgotten: a guide who took them to wonderful places with his young son; old ladies who whistled as they climbed past them on a sacred mountain; markets where everything that lives was sold; a wooden house high up near the beautiful Seven Stars Ricefield, where everyone seemed to be turning 100 but the young people had left for the dreary concrete city in the valley.

“That is the image that has stayed with us,” writes Harrie: “a special and beautiful country, full of contrasts. Still deeply rooted in a rich past, but with many influences from more recent times. And with friendly people who came to practice their English on us or touch us briefly.

In “China and Other Dreams”, these memories return in two divergent visual worlds. Harrie shows a series of prints from his archive — some still silver gelatin, printed immediately after the trip — shot with his Leica M. Sometimes intuitive and cinematic, a style that would later shape his digital work. Birgitt complements this with the material that emerged in her sketchbooks at the time: collages, drawings, and paintings in which she transforms the journey into dreamy, colorful images and personal iconography.

“We came back with a mountain of memories,” writes Harrie. “Travel leaves indelible marks on your soul and in your consciousness. It was a joy to go back in time, to recall these images and to be able to share them in this exhibition”.

It is as Huā Shi reminds us: “Every journey has a beginning but never ends.”

Bijna dertig jaar geleden reisden Birgitt Busz en Harrie Blommesteijn twee keer door China — samen goed voor drie maanden die als echte ontdekkingsreizen voelden. De CITS, het staatsreisbureau dat toeristen vooral liet zien wat mocht worden gezien, bestond nog. Maar er waren inmiddels ook kleine zelfstandigen die reizigers zoals zij hielpen buiten de gebaande paden te komen, naar plekken waar ze zelf een bezienswaardigheid vormden.

Het leidde tot ontmoetingen die ze nooit zijn vergeten: een gids die hen met zijn zoontje naar wonderbaarlijke plekken bracht; oude dametjes die hen fluitend voorbij klommen op een heilige berg; markten waar alles wat leeft werd verkocht; een houten huis hoog bij het prachtige Seven Stars Ricefield, waar iedereen honderd leek te worden maar de jongeren vertrokken waren naar de troosteloze betonnen stad in het dal.

“Dat is het beeld dat ons is bijgebleven,” schrijft Harrie: “een bijzonder en beeldschoon land, vol contrasten. Nog diepgeworteld in een rijk verleden, maar met veel invloeden van recentere tijden. En met vriendelijke mensen die hun Engels op ons kwamen oefenen of ons even aanraken ”

In China and Other Dreams keren deze herinneringen terug in twee uiteenlopende beeldwerelden. Harrie toont een serie prints uit zijn archief — een deel nog zilvergelatine, direct na de reis afgedrukt — geschoten met zijn Leica M. Soms intuïtief en filmisch, een stijl die later zijn digitale werk zou vormen.  Birgitt vult dit aan met het materiaal dat destijds in haar schetsboeken ontstond: collages, tekeningen en schilderijen waarin ze de reis omzet in dromerige, kleurrijke beelden en persoonlijke iconografie.

“Wij kwamen terug met een berg herinneringen,” schrijft Harrie. “Reizen laten onuitwisbare sporen na op je ziel en in je bewustzijn. Het was een feest om weer terug te gaan in de tijd. deze beelden op te roepen en die te mogen delen in deze tentoonstelling”.

Het is zoals  Huā Shi ons voorhoudt: “Iedere reis heeft een begin maar eindigt nooit.”
