Jacque Gilbert “Turangawaewae 3: Travels Around Myself” 21.02 – 4.04.2009
February 21, 2009 2:47 pm
Jacqueline Gilbert (New Zealand, 1960) shows in this exhibition part of her sequence of panoramic photographs in which she charts her movements around the world as a drama of self-expression.
The main focus of her work has centred on landscape, particularly panoramic self-portraits, using the title of Turangawaewae. This is a native Maori (NZ) word meaning standing place or place of belonging, often used to refer to the tree, the river, or the mountain to which one belongs. The three vertical panoramas are new work, shot while travelling in New Zealand last year. Photographically impressive, she shows again in these images the relationship between man and nature. The horizontal series exhibited here was made during an artist-in residency in Can Serat, in the town of El Bruc at the base of the Montserrat mountain range 45 minutes out of Barcelona in Catalonia. Technically impressive, the sweep of the panorama encompasses as many as 17 images ‘stitched’ together. This format allows the artist to appear more than once in each scene, t |
The large 3-panelled work of Montserrat was commissioned by the City of Amsterdam to hang for a year as a broad sweep of public art in front of Amsterdam’s central train station, standing 4 x 45 metres.
