12-06-10 through 17-07-2010 Lodz Kaliska. This artistic group was founded in 1979 and since then has found its permanent place in contemporary Polish art scene. Over the years, their artistic activity – significantly preceded what is now in Poland called critical art – has always had strong opponents and critics, never yielding to prevailing styles and tendencies. On the other hand, their unconventional activities bordering on performance art or the so-called theatre of the absurd have also won them many enthusiasts. Many short movies and videos they produced referred to the poetics of silent movies and to international the surrealist avant-garde of the pre-war period. They have treated photography in a very peculiar way, being the only group that has been consistent in realising the programme of staged photography. Elements of surprise and even scandal were quite often present in their activities – they helped to emphasise numbness, duplicity and mimicry of human behaviour, operational stupidity of various institutions as well as criticism of the arrogance of the fast-paced contemporary world. All this was of course related to the period in which these activities were being carried out – the realisations in the late 70’s, during the final years of the Gierek-era were different from those from the Martial Law-period (publication of the underground magazine TANGO, participation in informal, non-institutional art life); they in turn differed from their realisations at the turn of the 90’s and during the later decade of increasing consumerism and the rat race of today. |

Lodz Kaliska; the early years… Lodz Kaliska. Deze artistieke groep werd opgericht in 1979 en heeft sindsdien haar vaste plek in de hedendaagse Poolse kunstscène gevonden. Hun jaren-lange activiteit, die aanzienlijk voorafging aan wat nu in Polen zogenaamde kritische kunst wordt genoemd, heeft altijd sterke tegenstanders en critici gehad, omdat zij nooit zwichten voor de heersende stijlen en stromingen. Aan de andere kant, grensde hun onconventionele activiteiten zo aan performance kunst en de theater van het absurde dat ze ook veel liefhebbers voor zich wonnen. Veel korte films en video’s die ze hebben geproduceerd refereert naar de poëtica van stomme films en de internationale surrealistische avant-garde van de vooroorlogse periode. Ze behandelen fotografie op een zeer eigenaardige manier, de enige groep zijnde die consistent geweest is in het realiseren van het programma van de geënsceneerde fotografie. Voor de realisaties van hun historische parafrasen nodigden ze vrijwilligers uit, resulterend in de creatie van een soort van casual en pompeus-vrije deelname aan kunstzinnige activiteiten door vele verschillende mensen. Elementen van verbazing en schandaal waren heel vaak aanwezig in hun activiteiten – zo konden zij bijdragen aan het benadrukken van een gevoel van vlakte, dubbelhartigheid en mimiek van menselijk gedrag, de domheid van de werking van een beurocratische instellingen en kritiek op de arrogantie van de snelle hedendaagse wereld. Dit alles was uiteraard in verband met de periode waarin deze werkzaamheden werden uitgevoerd – de realisaties van eind jaren 70, tijdens de laatste jaren van Gierek-periode, waren anders dan die van de Staat van Beleg-periode (met de publicatie van het ondergrondse tijdschrift TANGO, deelname aan informele, niet-institutionele kunst-scene); deze verschilden, op hun beurt, van de realisaties op de drempel van de jaren 90 en later tijdens het decennium van het toenemend consumentisme en rat race van vandaag.
