Láng voordat de Corona-pandemie toesloeg en onze steden er voor het eerst in eeuwen verlaten uit liet zien, zocht een bescheiden Amsterdammer mét fotocamera de stilte op. Een stilte die actief gezocht moest worden; in de doorkijk van een verlaten steeg, op het lege strand van Ijmuiden, in een weerspiegeling van een takje in het water of de draf van een paard op het Volgermeerpolder. Wég van de drukte. In de stilte vóór de storm. Kalmte in de chaos. Stilte ligt voor Peter Veltman in een klein hoekje.

In 2017 heeft Veltman reeds een mooie en succesvolle expositie gehad in WM. Met deze tweede tentoonstelling presenteert Veltman zijn boek “Soms was het Stil” (2022), waar hij de afgelopen vijf jaar aan heeft gewerkt. Het moge duidelijk zijn dat Peter, in zijn 75ste levensjaar, nog lang niet klaar is met het uitbreiden van zijn oeuvre. Sterker nog, hij lijkt nog maar net begonnen.

Veltman richt zich op een breed scala aan fotografische onderwerpen; van stadsgezichten tot landschapsfotografie, van architectuur tot natuur, van organisch figuratief tot geometrische abstracties. Melancholische zwart-wit landschappen gehuld in mist. Verstilde zeelandschappen, waar de benevelde horizon een gevoel van weemoed oproept. Daarnaast ook dierenportretten; vogels, honden, paarden en koeien. Veltman legt dit alles zonder vooropgezet plan vast op een manier die verassend inlevend is. De empathie die Veltman voelt voor zowel zijn subjecten als objecten is tastbaar. Dit is niet een fotograaf van het grote gebaar, maar juist van de tedere blik, van het gevoelige moment. Met het hart van een dichter brengt Veltman het beeld dat hij al in zijn hoofd heeft samen met de etherische momenten die op zijn pad komen. Dit doet hij met een bijzonder gevoel voor compositie. Ondanks het feit dat Veltman relatief kort geleden – sinds 2008 pas – zich voornamelijk is gaan bezighouden met fotografie, blijkt zijn gevoel voor compositionele ritmiek en het vangen van het juiste moment feilloos.

Met het oog van een schilder zoekt Veltman naar de verstilling van de oogopslag. Een blik van sympathieke verwondering, van enigheid in het alledaagse, van rust in de roerigheid; een stille blik. Amsterdam is altijd al een drukke stad geweest. Een rumoerige plaats. Een plek van werk, en van winkelen, en van dronken gelal in de nachtelijke uurtjes. Een stad waar een rustige plek ver te zoeken is, en meestal te veel gevraagd. Maar soms, heel soms, is het stil.

En daar is Peter dan, om het vast te leggen.

Long before the Corona pandemic struck and made our cities look deserted for the first time in centuries, a modest Amsterdammer with a camera sought the quiet. A silence that had to be actively hunted for; in the echo of a deserted alley, on the empty beach of Ijmuiden, in the reflection of a twig in the water or in the trot of a horse on the Volgermeerpolder. Away from the crowds. In the calm before the storm. The quiet in the chaos. Silence lurks in small corners for Peter Veltman.

In 2017 Veltman already had a beautiful and successful exhibition in WM. With this second exhibition, Veltman presents his book “Soms was het Stil (Sometimes, there was silence) 2022”, on which he has been working for the last five years. At 75 years young, it is obvious that Peter is far from finished expanding his oeuvre. In fact, he appears to have only just begun.

Veltman focuses on a wide variety of photographic subjects; from cityscapes to landscape photography, from architecture to nature, from the organically figurative to geometric abstractions. Melancholic black and white landscapes shrouded in fog. Enchanted seascapes, where the faded horizon prompts feelings of melancholy. And at the same time absorbing animal portraits; birds, dogs, horses and cows combined with a delicate dose of optical humour too boot.. Veltman achieves this without an outlined plan and in a way that is particularly and surprisingly empathetic, without becoming anecdotal and losing sight of the importance of composition. The empathy Veltman feels for both his subjects and objects is tangible. This is not a photographer of the grand gesture, but rather of the tender gaze, of the sensitive moment. With the heart of a poet, Veltman synthesizes the image he already has in his head with the ethereal moments that come his way. He does this with a special sense of composition. In spite of the fact that Veltman, relatively recently – since 2008 – has mainly focused on photography, his sense of compositional rhythm and capturing the moment is flawless.

With the eye of a painter, Veltman searches for the stillness of the glance. A look of sympathetic wonder, of uniqueness in the everyday, of tranquility in the chaos; a silent gaze. Amsterdam has always been a busy city. A noisy place. A place of work, and of shopping, and of drunken yelling in the nightly hours. A city where a quiet spot is hard to find, and usually, way too much to ask. But sometimes, very occasionally, there is silence.

And there you’ll find Peter, ready to capture it.
