Can a bitch be sensitive? Or indeed, does a title like “Sensitive Bitches” denote anything else other than pure misogyny. Short answer? Yes, it can. Sensitive Bitches is the exciting new, and first duo exhibition by anne k. and vita s. that raises questions on issues of identity in the broadest sense. It is a ‘coming out’ of sorts; a meeting place and space for the celebration and empowerment of diversity, fluidity and where all voices have right of way, stay and play.

Race, gender, sexuality, physical health and mental, body image and its diversity are themes and contra-themes that vibrate and undulate within the myriad forms of visual and audio works that inhabit the exhibition space of WM. They bravely ask the viewer: “what is the ‘normal’? And if you do have an answer, am I, then, not normal?” In the theatre of life it is a truism to state that each person has multiple, interchangeable identities. However, these two brave artists embody that fact, and express that fact lyrically, poetically, with great sensitivity, celebratory raucousness and painful self-awareness.

Categorisations and labelling are an inescapable and necessary fact of our social existence. This is especially true in our normative societies, replete with biases towards the mainstream and ideals of perfection. These processes of definition can be – at the risk of being obvious – rather aggressive, derogatory and infused with stigma. Sensitive Bitches eschews all that. This exposé twists and turns like a mountain river; through pain and pleasure, black and white, lesbians, butches, bitches and ladies of all genders. It jumps hoops through neuro-diversity, multiple voices, tits and asses and psycho-somatic imperfections. It rushes through loves and losses, the deep subconscious and the crystal clear. It winds from self-stigmatisation through self-definition and cascades into a waterfall of self-determination.

In spite of being the first duo-show that artists anne k. and vita s. have planned to create and produce together, they have been friends and have worked together in group shows for quite a number of years. And it shows. This exposé is the result of many months – if not years – of communication, discussions and dialogue. And again, it shows. Despite the pluriformity of the media used, from mixed-media works, collages and paintings, to photography, sculpture, video and even an audio-installation, the exhibition is surprisingly coherent within its multi-vocality.

So, to answer our question; can a bitch be sensitive? Yes (s)he can! Sensitivity requires authentic courage and real bravery. That is a fact. A bitch is only a bitch because of intense insecurity and extreme vulnerability. anne k. and vita s. have managed to reconcile these seemingly irreconcilable labels. They have infused it with the fluidity they so dearly would like to have bestowed upon their own realities, their own bodies, their own selves.

This is a brave exhibition ladies and gentlemen. This is a multi-vocal, gender-bending, riotous celebration of the diversity within.

Kan een bitch gevoelig zijn? En kan een titel als “Sensitive Bitches” iets anders aangeven dan pure vrouwenhaat. Kort antwoord? Ja, dat kan. Sensitive Bitches is de opwindende nieuwe en eerste duo-tentoonstelling van anne k. en vita s. Het roept vragen op over identiteits-kwesties in de breedste zin van het woord. Het is een soort coming-out; een ontmoetingsplaats en ruimte voor de viering en empowerment van diversiteit en fluïditeit, en waar alle stemmen er toe doen, alle stemmen er mogen zijn en mogen spelen.

Ras, gender, seksualiteit, zowel fysieke als psychische gezondheid, lichaamsbeeld en de diversiteit ervan zijn thema’s en contra-thema’s die vibreren en golven binnen de talloze vormen van visuele en audiowerken die de tentoonstellingsruimte van WM bevolken. Ze vragen moedig aan de toeschouwer: “Wat is het ‘normale’? En als je een antwoord hebt, ben ikdat dan niet?” In het theater van het leven is het een gemeenplaats om te stellen dat elke persoon meerdere, onderling verwisselbare identiteiten heeft. Deze twee dappere kunstenaars belichamen dat feit echter. Zij drukken dat feit lyrisch, poëtisch, met grote gevoeligheid, feestelijke rauwheid en pijnlijk zelfbewustzijn uit.

Categorisaties en etikettering zijn een onontkoombaar en noodzakelijk feit van ons sociale bestaan. Dit geldt zeker in onze normatieve samenlevingen, boordevol vooroordelen hellend richting de mainstream en onze idealen van perfectie. Deze definitieprocessen kunnen – met het risico voor de hand liggend te zijn – redelijk agressief, denigrerend en doordrongen van stigma zijn. Sensitive Bitches schuwt dat allemaal. Dit exposé draait en kolkt als een bergrivier; door pijn en plezier, zwart en wit, lesbiennes, butches, bitches en dames van alle geslachten. Het springt hoepels door neurodiversiteit, meerdere stemmen, tieten en billen en psychosomatische onvolkomenheden. Het snelt door liefdes en verliezen, het diepe onderbewuste en het glasheldere. Het kronkelt vanaf zelfstigmatisering via zelfbepaling en explodeert in een waterval van zelfbeschikking.

Ondanks dat het de eerste duo-show is die kunstenaars anne k. en vita s. hebben gepland om samen te creëren en te produceren, zijn ze al langer vrienden en hebben al een aantal jaren samen in groepstentoonstellingen gewerkt. En dat is te zien. Deze exposé is het resultaat van vele maanden – zo niet jaren – van communicatie, discussies en dialoog. En nogmaals, dat is te zien. Ondanks de pluriformiteit van de gebruikte media, van mixed-media werken, collages en schilderijen tot fotografie, beeldhouwkunst, video en zelfs een audio-installatie, is de tentoonstelling bepaald coherent in zijn meerstemmigheid.

Dus, om onze vraag te beantwoorden: kan een bitch gevoelig zijn? Ja, dat kan! Gevoeligheid vereist authentieke lef en echte moed. Dat is een feit. Een bitch is slechts een bitch vanwege intense onzekerheid en extreme kwetsbaarheid. anne k. en vita s. zijn erin geslaagd deze ogenschijnlijk onverzoenlijke labels met elkaar te verenigen. Ze hebben het doordrenkt met de vloeibaarheid die ze zo graag aan hun eigen realiteit, hun eigen lichaam, hun eigen zelf zouden willen schenken.

Dit is een moedige tentoonstelling, dames en heren. Dit is een multi-vocale, gender-benderende, losbandige viering van de diversiteit binnenin.
