Beata Marcinkowska “VENUS – The Great Return” 03.06 – 20.08.2022

In the context of this exhibition, the title “Great Return” has two basic meanings. It is a continuation, development and the possibility of realizing the exhibition after two years of failures resulting from pandemic restrictions, but most of all it is a leap of the exhibition heroine from the distant past to the present. It is the return of prehistoric Venus, the first known ideal of prehistoric beauty to the present day.

Nowadays, the bodies of women must fulfill a lot of cultural expectations. For the body to be widely accepted it should undergo various practices as far as appearance or behavior go. Nowadays a body is for women is a task, a financial investment. In order to be accepted or recognized a woman’s body has to be worked on all the time. That is why an average or even less average body of a woman is constantly under an external pressure. Women do things which are uncomfortable for them and  impractical, things they have to do because they are culturally required.

Beata Marcinkowska uses a transposed and multiplied image of Venus from Willendorf in her works. This is the symbol of prehistoric beauty, which surely is very far from the aesthetic ideas about the contemporary woman. It is probably one of the first dreams about an ideal woman. Here we have a plump woman, who today may be considered obese but in prehistoric times was a synonym of health and strength. She was associated with affluence and fertility. Beata Marcinkowska tells a contemporary story about a prehistoric ideal of beauty by placing it in various contexts. What’s the effect? You will be able to find out about it at the exhibition.

In de context van deze tentoonstelling heeft de titel “the Great Return” twee fundamentele betekenissen. Het is een voortzetting, een ontwikkeling en de mogelijkheid om de tentoonstelling eindelijk te kunnen realiseren na twee jaar van valse starten en pandemische mislukkingen. Maar het is vooral een sprong van de tentoonstellingsheldin vanuit het verre verleden naar het heden. Het is de terugkeer van de prehistorische Venus, het eerste bekende ideaal van prehistorische schoonheid naar de dag van vandaag.

Tegenwoordig moeten de lichamen van vrouwen voldoen aan veel culturele verwachtingen. Om ervoor te zorgen dat het lichaam algemeen aanvaard wordt, moet het verschillende handelingen ondergaan wat betreft uiterlijk of gedrag. Het vrouwenlichaam is vooral een taak, een financiële investering. Om geaccepteerd of erkend te worden, moet er voortdurend aan het lichaam van een vrouw worden gewerkt en gesleuteld. Dat is de reden waarom een gemiddeld of zelfs minder dan gemiddeld vrouwenlichaam constant onder externe toezicht staat. Vrouwen doen dingen die voor hen ongemakkelijk en onpraktisch zijn, dingen die ze moeten doen omdat ze cultureel worden verwacht.

Beata Marcinkowska gebruikt in haar werken een getransponeerd en vermenigvuldigd beeld van de Venus van Willendorf. Dit is het symbool van prehistorische schoonheid, die erg ver verwijderd is van de esthetische ideeën over de hedendaagse vrouw. Het is waarschijnlijk één van de eerste dromen over de ideale vrouw. Hier hebben we een mollige vrouw, die tegenwoordig als zwaarlijvig zou worden beschouwd, maar in de prehistorie een synoniem was voor gezondheid en kracht. Ze werd geassocieerd met welvaart en vruchtbaarheid. Beata Marcinkowska vertelt een hedendaags verhaal over een prehistorisch schoonheidsideaal door het in verschillende contexten te plaatsen. Tytułowy „Wielki powrót” ma w kontekście tej wystawy dwa podstawowe znaczenia. To kontynuacja, rozwinięcie i możliwość zrealizowania wystawy po dwóch latach niepowodzeń wynikających z pandemicznych obostrzeń, ale przede wszystkim to skok bohaterki wystawy z dalekiej przeszłości do teraźniejszości. To powrót prehistorycznej Venus, pierwszego znanego ideału prehistorycznego piękna do czasów współczesnych.

W dzisiejszych czasach ciała kobiet muszą spełniać wiele kulturowych oczekiwań. Aby ciało było powszechnie akceptowane, powinno podlegać różnym praktykom, jeśli chodzi o wygląd czy zachowanie. Współcześnie ciało jest dla kobiet zadaniem, inwestycją finansowa. Aby zostać zaakceptowanym lub uznanym, nad ciałem trzeba cały czas pracować. Dlatego przeciętne lub nawet mniej przeciętne, ciało kobiety jest stale pod presją otoczenia. Kobiety robią rzeczy, które są dla nich niewygodne i niepraktyczne, rzeczy, które muszą zrobić, ponieważ jest to kulturowo wymagane.

Beata Marcinkowska w swojej twórczości wykorzystuje przetransponowany i zwielokrotniony wizerunek Venus z Willendorfu. To symbol prehistorycznego piękna, który z pewnością bardzo odbiega od estetycznych wyobrażeń o współczesnej kobiecie. To jedno z pierwszych marzeń o idealnej kobiecie. Mamy tutaj pulchną kobietę, którą dziś można uznać za otyłą, ale w czasach prehistorycznych była ona synonimem zdrowia i siły. Kojarzyła się z zamożnością i płodnością. Beata Marcinkowska snuje współczesną opowieść o prehistorycznym ideale piękna poprzez umieszczanie go w różnych kontekstach. Jaki jest efekt? O tym będzie można przekonać się na wystawie.

She lives and works in Łódź (Poland). The Intermedia artist, art’s animator, PhD in Arts in the discipline of Fine Arts. In her artistic work, she deals with various aspects of the life of a contemporary woman, her identity and culturally attributed features, as well as the symbolism of the female body nowadays. She carries out her own artistic projects – objects, installations, collages, land art and performance. She takes part in individual and collective exhibitions and artistic events, transmedia and site-specific actions in Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark and Canada.

The artist prepares and conducts artistic workshops for children, teenagers and adults. She puts into life her original both artistic and social projects created for the benefit of Łódź citizens. She is also the author of numerous publications, among them text books and workbooks for children.

The artist is the member of both Art and Documentation Society and Polish Committee of International Society of Education through Art (affiliated with UNESCO).

She teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź, where she also works as a director of the Institute of Artistic Education.

Since 2018 also active in ‘’Frakcja” – female artists and theoreticians of arts group across generations, which was established in 2016 in Łódź.

She is interested in her personal development, enlarging her consciousness and awareness of her own body and voice. In her free time, she practices yoga, tai chi.
