Na twintig jaar als fotograaf te hebben gewerkt moest Koning zich van de één op de andere dag zich fulltime bezighouden met ziekte door kanker en de behandeling daarvan. Gedurende drie jaar bracht ze ongeveer driehonderd keer door in wachtkamers van verschillende ziekenhuizen. Wachtend tussen hoop en wanhoop, op een diagnose, een behandeling en uiteindelijk op genezing. Haar ervaringen hebben geleid tot deze expositie en het gelijknamige boek ‘Wacht Af’, waarin ze de beklemmende sfeer en tegenstrijdige emoties in wachtkamers vertaalt in beeld en tekst. Koning fotografeerde haar zieke uitzichten in wacht- en behandelkamers en maakte met deze klinische beelden indringende collages.

Naast fictieve dialogen en aangrijpende verhalen in wachtkamers, zetten gesprekken tussen het hoofdpersonage en haar kinderen de toon van het verhaal. Verder spelen een in vrijheid rondvliegende kraai en een gevangen doorzichtige vis een belangrijke symbolische rol.

Dit project overstijgt feitelijkheden over kanker en biedt ruimte voor eigen associaties en gevoelens. ‘Wacht Af’ is ontnuchterend minimalistisch, opbeurend en soms humoristisch tot op het absurdistische af.

Het boek zal op vrijdag 19 april van 17:00 tot 19:00 uur tijdens de opening van de tentoonstelling worden gelanceerd.

Op zaterdag 20 april tussen 13:00 en 18:00 uur zal Maaike ook aanwezig zijn in Gallery WM, waar het boek kan worden verkregen. Mis deze bijzondere tentoonstelling niet!

De tentoonstelling wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Tijl Fonds, onder beheer van het Cultuurfonds.

Zowel de kunstenaar als Gallery WM bedanken ook alle mensen die het boek hebben gesteund via crowdfunding op voordekunst.

Het boek

Ongeveer 1 op de 3 mensen krijgt kanker, veel van deze mensen en hun naasten zoeken in deze periode steun in boeken om erkenning en herkenning te vinden aan de emotionele tocht van ernstig ziek zijn. Er bestaan al veel informatieve boeken en ook persoonlijke verslaggevingen over kanker, maar er zijn maar weinig boeken over kanker die de realiteit ontstijgen en in woord en beeld ruimte geven voor eigen interpretatie en persoonlijk gevoel. Mede dankzij de steun van Stichting Jaap Harten Fonds heeft Esther de Vries een ontwerp voor het boek gemaakt dat naadloos aansluit op het thema van het boek.

Gallery WM proudly announces the upcoming exhibition “Wacht af,” (Wait and See) a compelling exploration of hope, despair, and the passage of time in hospital waiting rooms, by photographer and author Maaike Koning. After working as a photographer for twenty years, Koning suddenly had to focus full-time on cancer illness and its treatment.

For three years, Maaike Koning spent approximately three hundred times in the waiting rooms of various hospitals. Waiting between hope and despair, for a diagnosis, a treatment and ultimately a cure. Her experiences have led to this exhibition and the book of the same name Wacht Af, in which she translates the oppressive atmosphere and conflicting emotions in waiting rooms into images and text. Koning photographed her sick views in waiting and treatment rooms and made compelling collages with these clinical images.

Wacht af is not just a collection of photos but also of poignant stories and evocative collages that capture the complexity of the waiting room experience. In addition to fictional dialogues and humorous anecdotes, the collages provide a context and atmosphere that stimulate the imagination and raise questions about illness, emotions, and events.

The book will be launched during the opening of the exhibition on Friday, April 19 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. On Saturday April 20 between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM, Maaike will also be present in Gallery WM, where the book can be obtained. Do not miss this special exhibition, which offers an intimate glimpse into a period of waiting between hope and despair.

The book

About 1 in 3 people get cancer, many of these people and their loved ones seek support in books during this period to find recognition of the emotional journey of being seriously ill. There are already many informative books and personal accounts about cancer, but there are few books about cancer that transcend reality and provide space in words and images for your own interpretation and personal impressions. Partly thanks to the support of the Jaap Harten Fund Foundation, Esther de Vries has created a design for the book that fits seamlessly with the theme of the book.
